Heading for disaster

Hi, everyone must have read about all the issues going on with the OBC reservation system in educational institutions. I think this is a big mistake and can lead to very adverse consequences.

I am not against the OBC reservations but I don’t think they should be given such a high ratio in one of the best institutes of the world (IIMs & IITs). I agree that they should be helped in coming forward, help the needy in getting education but why in the best institute of the country. There are many other institutes that can fulfill their demands but don’t go to such a high extent that the merit no longer counts. If they want like this only then one day they will say that every 4th Prime Minister & President should be OBC. Does it make any sense? Why deprive the meritous student of his place.

The problem is not only that. I don’t think the correct OBC candidates avail these quotas. These quotas were started after independence to bring education to unprivileged, those who cannot afford it. Now the situation has changed not everywhere but most of them. I have seen various students, son of IAS officers, doctors, took education in very good boarding schools, did coaching in great institutions and finally ended up in IIT or IIM just because of these quotas. Now should they get quotas to get through, I don’t think so they had opportunity like everyone else.

Consider example of civil services itself. Around 35% reserved for OBC. People going to such a high administrative jobs(IAS, IPS). ONLY people on whose shoulders our country runs. Shouldn’t it be done by one who has got merit and not who has got the tag. I mean a person with rank 200 doesn’t get to become IAS in general category but a person with rank 5000 becomes because he was OBC. Isn’t that unfair? Then we blame the system that these people are not doing anything. We threw out a potential candidate who could have made changes but no one understands that.

As I said I am not against these quotas but I think we all need to be rational. Give them help where they need- schools, colleges, banking, defense and other mid-jobs but don’t make them “kings”. These highly coveted places like IIM, IIT & civil services deserve to get who really deserves it and not on some external factors. Many people think that their potential is not utilized in India. God knows what the government is thinking. In the end they blame us that we will go to foreign to do our studies when we have world class facilities here. What are we supposed to do!!!

Abhishek
